Road Rage Prevention
If you ever drive down Cloud Springs Road in North Georgia, you know that there is a ton of construction going on. They are going from two lanes to four, re-doing the interstate overpass, and repaving. For some reason people automatically become terrible drivers in construction zones…maybe it has something to do with all the orange barrels everywhere. If you are anything like me, you view bad driving as one of the most irritating things on earth. There is just no excuse for sitting still when the light is green or trying to turn left from the right lane, or stopping to ask the guy holding the ‘go slow’ traffic sign where the closest Taco Bell is. All of this usually creates the desire to react in a way that…well, is not the best. I’m sure I’m not alone in this.
I often catch myself making cutting comments or about to lay on the horn. This reoccurring event took place just a few days ago. It reminded me that many times it is our reactions that get us in trouble more so than our actions. Our actions are many times planned while reactions are usually based completely on our current emotion. So the questions is, how can we be sure to react correctly when life’s events irritate us? A passage that comes to mind is James 1:19-20. James tells us to be “swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath. For the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” We need to focus on producing the righteousness of God in our life through the way we act as well as the way that we react. According to this verse one way that we can do that is to resist the urge to get angry and tell someone off, but to be quick to listen and give others the benefit of the doubt.
This is just one change we can make. What are some other things that we can do to ensure that we react in a way that is pleasing to God?
